The Engine Room Fires Up: A Bold New Dining Destination Opens in Derby

Derby’s hospitality scene has welcomed a bold new addition as The Engine Room restaurant officially opens on Riverlights, in the city centre. Located within the soon-to-be Derby Riverlights hotel (currently Holiday Inn), The Engine Room marks a significant milestone in the £5 million redevelopment of the Riverlights property, which is set to relaunch in early 2026 under IHG’s voco brand.

Now open to both hotel guests and the public, the restaurant offers a dynamic dining experience in the heart of Derby, blending modern British cuisine with a setting that pays homage to the city’s engineering legacy.

With its name and aesthetic inspired by Derby’s historic ties to the automotive and rail industries, The Engine Room features industrial-chic interiors, warm lighting and a menu designed to appeal to locals, business travellers and leisure guests alike.

Starboard Hotels CEO Paul Callingham describes the restaurant as “a statement of confidence in Derby’s future and a celebration of its identity.” The Engine Room is already proving to be a cornerstone of the voco Derby Riverlights experience, offering a welcoming space for everything from casual lunches to evening dining.

With its grand opening coinciding with the next step of the hotel’s redevelopment, The Engine Room is expected to become a key player in Derby’s dining scene, offering a fresh and dynamic experience in the heart of the city. As the hotel continues its phased renovation ahead of its full launch in early 2026, The Engine Room sets the tone for what guests and locals can expect: quality, character and a commitment to excellence.
